2021 (archives)

All photos are my own unless noted otherwise. I will happily share these (& more) with you (free of charge) as long as you ask me first!

Dec. 27, 2021-Jan. 2, 2022: Still going through all my nice photos from NOAA’s Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary.

Dec. 20-26, 2021: Another nice shot of Looe Key. I plan to start a new folder on this site where I’ll be posting all of them (not just the best). A little over-saturated on the blue end, though.

Dec. 13-19, 2021: Finally! Some new coral photos. I’ll slowly but surely be posting my photos from a recent trip to NOAA’s Looe Key Marine Sanctuary. Here’s one of my current favs.

Dec. 6-12, 2021: You never know where you’ll find one of your photos. Glad to see one of my Solomon Islands photos on the “Seawomenofmelanesia” Instagram account (though misattributed to being taken from nearby Papua New Guinea).

Nov. 29-Dec. 5, 2021: Stoked to see an amalgamation of some of my coral photos on the Corals of the World website, based on the legendary textbook series by Charlie Veron.

Nov. 22-28, 2021: Pleased to see one of my photos being used in an article about reef restoration efforts in the Pacific.

Nov. 15-21, 2021: Surely to be a repeat, but one of my all-time favs. Hell, it might be my absolute #1.

Nov. 8-14, 2021: Throwback to Raja Ampat; boy, do I sure miss diving and international travel.

Nov. 1-7, 2021: An Acropora spp. meadow off Indonesia’s second (or third) largest city: Makassar.

Oct. 25-31, 2021: In honor of Halloween, check out these spooky ghouls seemingly trapped in old reef limestone.

Oct. 18-24, 2021: Matt Curnock is taking some of the nicest coral reef photos on the planet (i.e., this is NOT my photo).

Oct. 11-17, 2021: Another stunner from Dongsha Atoll (South China Sea), the veritable WWIII flashpoint (hyperbole, or is it?!).

Oct. 4-10, 2021: One of my favorite shots from Dongsha Atoll (South China Sea). Unlike the Chinese SCS islands, which have been paved over, beautiful (albeit overfished) reefs can still be found along the Taiwanese islands and atolls.

Sept. 27-Oct. 3, 2021: A magic carpet flatworm from Palau, possibly one of my favorite (non-coral) animals!

Sept. 20-26, 2021: Looking down a wall in Tonga.

Sept. 13-19, 2021: Ricordea sp. cut-out. From the Dry Tortugas.

Sept. 6-12, 2021: Even MORE brain-like than an actual brain coral (of which this is not one), right? From the Dry Tortugas.

Aug. 30-Sept. 5, 2021: Flashback to my first NOAA NCRMP trip to the Flower Garden Banks in 2019.

Aug. 23-29, 2021: Another Dry Tortugas shot, either from Black Coral Rock or Texas Reef.

Aug. 16-22, 2021: Cool shot from “Black Coral Rock,” my favorite site we dived in Dry Tortugas National Park.

Aug. 9-15, 2021: “White Shoals” Dry Tortugas (from the same Acropora cervicornis thicket featured a few weeks back).

Aug. 2-8, 2021: A lonely Meandrina meandrites from Dry Tortugas.

July 26-Aug. 1, 2021: Montastrea cavernosa polyps from Dry Tortugas.

July 19-25, 2021: A macro image of an Acropora cervicornis branch tip. Taken in Dry Tortugas (FL).

July 12-18, 2021: The view from 80 ft at “Black Coral Rock,” a surprisingly lush reef near Dry Tortugas National Park.

July 5-11, 2021: Another Dry Tortugas (FL, USA) picture from our recent trip:

Mycetophyllia

June 28-July 4, 2021: Finally, some pictures actually taken in 2021! This is from our recent National Coral Reef Monitoring Program trip to Dry Tortugas National Park.

June 21-27, 2021: This might be a repeat, but it is one of my favorite reef shots of all time. Sadly, this Maldivian reef has since been destroyed by climate change-induced sea temperature rise.

June 14-20, 2021: From my first research trip to the Maldives in 2016. Hard to believe it was over five years ago.

June 7-13, 2021: Acropora forest in Komodo National Park, Indonesia.

May 31-June 6, 2021: Another throwback to the Solomon Islands. Really yearning for a good dive these days (have now logged only 4-5 in 1.5 years….).

May 24-30, 2021: One of my favorite shots from the Solomon Islands (Marovo Lagoon perhaps?)

May 17-23, 2021: throwback to 2013-Fiji’s Lau Archipelago. Looking forward to heading back one day.

May 10-16, 2021: Who said El Nido, Palawan, Philippines was ONLY about the epic topside scenery?!

May 3-9, 2021: Another shot from Mayreau, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Apr. 26-May 2, 2021: A nice shot of Mayreau Gardens from our trip to St. Vincent and the Grenadines over a year ago now (Fall 2019). Glad those guys are okay after the recent eruption in nearby St. Vincent.

Apr. 19-25, 2021: Heard a talk about Palau today, which made me think back to my time there in 2015. I wish there had been more light in this pic because it was straight up coral for days.

Apr. 12-18, 2021: Check out my nice coral photo for AOML’s “open house” on April 19-23rd.

Apr. 5-11, 2021: OK, so I added the white line, but you can’t tell me this fish school in Chagos looks like a face!

Mar. 29-Apr. 4, 2021: Not the first time I’ve featured a GBR stunner from Victor Huertas. Consider supporting him here.

Mar. 22-28, 2021: Stoked to see some of my photos on the International Coral Reef Initiative’s website (which happens to feature some of our Chagos work).

Mar. 15-21, 2021: Chagos (British Indian Ocean Territory). Although I don’t think this is one of my better photos from Chagos, it is the one National Geographic prefers!

Mar. 8-14, 2021: Solomon Islands! Sure would like to go back there.

Mar. 1-7, 2021: A rare photo OF me hovering over a reef in lovely New Caledonia (2013).

Feb. 22-28, 2021: Marovo Lagoon, Solomon Islands. Sure do miss those days (2015).

Feb. 15-21, 2021: Palau throw-back. These shallow, (high-light), relatively scoured reefs always make for good photo subjects.

Feb. 8-14, 2021: Happy to see some of my Coral Triangle seascape pics being promoted on SCUBAZoo. Check out their “Seascapes” link for some of my coral reef pics.

Feb. 1-7, 2021: El Nido, Palawan, Philippines is famous for its top-side scenery, but the (non-dynamited) reefs can be pretty spectacular, too.

Jan. 25-31, 2021: Happy to see some of my images from Palau being used on Coral Reef Image Bank, which integrates with Google Maps.

Jan. 18-24, 2021: You’re unlike to see something like this outside of the Coral Triangle.

Jan. 11-17, 2021: Not the first show on this page of my favorite dive site on Earth-Raja Ampat’s “Melissa’s Garden.”

Dec. 28, 2020-Jan. 3, 2021: Used a friend’s GoPro to take this shot of of “Mioskon” in the northern region of Raja Ampat.
