In 2017, I began working with the Carpe Diem fleet (https://carpediemmaldives.com) and Coral Reef CPR (http://www.coralreefcpr.org/) to educate tourists on coral reef ecology and coordinate efforts to remove crown of thorns seastars (COTS) from reefs in the Maldives (North and South Male Atolls, as well as Ari Atoll). In one week we managed to remove 900 COTS from 20 or so reefs, saving nearly a hectare of reef acreage from destruction. Carpe Diem and Coral Reef CPR are planning future COTS removal and marine biology education live aboard trips in the coming months. Please enquire with me or, alternatively, with them directly if you are interested in signing up. We are always looking for a few good volunteers! As for now, here are some shots from our mid-late May COTS cleanup trip.
